Why Treat Hair Loss?

A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis (41 studies including 7995 patients) published in JAMA Dermatology found that people with androgenetic alopecia experienced:

  • Moderate impairment in health-related quality of life.
  • Significant emotional distress.
  • Lower self-esteem reported in several included studies.
  • No consistent evidence that hair loss alone causes clinical depression across all patients, although some individuals were at higher risk.

One important takeaway was that emotional impact was often disproportionate to the degree of hair loss —someone with mild hair loss could experience severe distress, while someone with more advanced hair loss might cope well.

A 2022 review examined studies from 1992–2021 and concluded that hair loss:

  • Is a significant psychosocial stressor.
  • Reduces self-confidence.
  • Negatively affects body image.
  • Impairs quality of life.
  • Can contribute to anxiety and social avoidance.

Men vs Women

  • Women often report a larger psychological impact because hair is closely tied to cultural expectations of femininity and identity.
  • Men are also substantially affected, particularly younger men experiencing early hair loss, where concerns about attractiveness and aging can be pronounced.

Several studies have found that when treatments produce visible improvement, patients often report:

  • Improved confidence.
  • Better satisfaction with appearance.
  • Better quality of life.
  • Reduced distress about their hair.
